LZSU 646 values the gift of service! We believe that we GAIN even more than we GIVE through opportunities of service. Girls have opportunities to participate in a variety of service projects either with their own troop, or as a larger service unit.
Some of our regular Service Projects include:
Feed My Starving Children (www.fmsc.org)
Bernie’s Book Bank (www.berniesbookbank.org)
Palatine PATH (www.path-palatine.org)
Village of Lake Zurich (www.lakezurich.org)
Emmaus House (www.emmaus-house.org)
Joanie’s Closet
St. Francis de Sales Food Pantry
We also frequently work with many of the senior living centers in the Village, as well as many organizations within our Village and surrounding areas.
Typically, we plan at least 2-3 Service Unit wide events a year that are centered on community service and giving back. These events often fall on the weekends in order to provide opportunities for parents and family members to come along, but we also have weekday evening activities as well. Events are planned that allow for as many ages as possible, as we find that any time we can mix ages and troops, we meet new friends and learn new skills!
Troops are encouraged to find ways to act in service to the schools or churches which provide them space for meetings, providing an example of one of our mottos of “Leave a place better than you found it.” Troops may participate in community service as a way of fulfilling a requirement for a badge or journey, but often they find that these activities also end up on their FUN ACTIVITIES list and it teaches them how rewarding and fun it can be to give your time and talents to help others.
